How does Reddit know what my location is?
For desktop users and mobile users, Reddit captures your IP address and infers a location based on your IP address. To do this we leverage an IP lookup service that provides us with a City/State/Country location. The most precise location we currently store is at a City level.
For mobile users, while ‘location services’ may be enabled on your device, your precise location is encrypted and stored on your device, it’s not something that we capture, store or use currently.
What is Reddit using my location for?
Our goal is to surface communities that may be relevant to you based on your location. We use the City/State/Country location information to help make recommendations on content that you might find interesting or useful because we believe that there’s value in connecting redditors to information and communities that are in their area to help them better navigate the world around them.
As an example, if you visit Reddit today and your IP address is from San Francisco, we may recommend communities in San Francisco, or in adjacent cities. In areas where we may not have city specific communities, we might make content recommendations at a State or Country level.
How long does Reddit keep my location information?
We only store this location information for 90 days from your last visit. Each time you visit, you may see content recommendations that are relevant to the location we’ve inferred from your IP address.
Are you storing my precise location information?
No, we don’t currently store precise latitude and longitude data from your mobile device. If you are a mobile app user, we may ask you if we can enable location information on your device, but your precise location is not something that we we capture, store or use. If we were to change this, we’d communicate before making any change and you would be able to change your privacy settings.
Can I opt-out of my location being used for content recommendations?
Yes, but we hope you don’t! You can opt-out of receiving location based content recommendations at any point by visiting your Privacy preferences and toggling off the “Personalize recommendations based on your general location”.
