How does Reddit show me personalized Ads?
We personalize the ads you see on the Reddit based on the following:
- Information we may have about you such as your general location (City/State)
- Your activity on Reddit such as votes, clicks, browsing history, communities.
- Information that our advertisers and partners may share with us, such as your email address.
We never provide your personal information, subscriptions, views, votes or any other activity on the site to our partners or advertisers. We also do not personalize at an individual level, instead we allow our advertisers to target a broad group of users based on categories that their Reddit activity may correspond to. These categories map to our communities and you can find a full list of them here. We never share the details of which users clicked on or were displayed an ad.
Can I opt-out of having advertisers share my info with you?
If you don’t want Reddit to use information based on your activity on websites or apps from our partners and advertisers, you can adjust your Privacy Settings and you can opt-out of this personalization preference:
Personalize ads based on your activity and information from our partners
Allow us to use your interactions with sites and apps we partner with to show and information our advertisers send to us to show you better ads.
How do advertisers share my e-mail address with you?
If you're not opted-out from the setting above, our advertisers and partners can upload a list containing hashed (encrypted) e-mail addresses to our secured environment. There we do a match against our own set of hashed e-mail addresses of Reddit users to identify a group of users that we may be good a good candidate for that advertisers offer. Your e-mail is encrypted no accessible to either our partner or Reddit. This provides us with a way to personalize the ads you see while still taking extra precautions to protect your privacy on Reddit - we never share the matched account data or any of your other activity with the partners or advertisers
Can I opt-out from having my activity on Reddit used for Advertising?
We no longer support an option to opt-in or opt-out from personalized ads based on your activity on the site. Having said that, we want to make clear that we do not sell or share your activity on the site or your personal information with our advertisers or partners.
Why was the option to opt-out removed?
Advertising is our main source of revenue and the opt-out didn't change the number of ads we displayed, just whether or not they were relevant. So while we understand that many people may not like ads, we believe that most of our users would prefer to see ads that are relevant.
Is there a way for me to completely turn off ads on Reddit?
If you prefer an ad-free experience on Reddit, please consider subscribing to Reddit Premium.
How can I opt-out of personalization or use of my activity while on Reddit?
Users who wish to not have any of their activity attributed to their account can use our new Anonymous Browsing Mode (ABM) feature that we rolled out on our iOS and Android apps last year. This works well for those users who are logged-in, but want to view a community or content anonymously. Learn more about how ABM works.
