Redditors give each other awards as a way to recognize and react to each other’s contributions. Posts or comments that have been awarded are often highlighted and sometimes the recipient of an award will also get special perks like Reddit Coins or a few days of ad-free browsing and access to the exclusive r/lounge.
Different types of awards are:
-
Community
Moderators can create custom awards made especially for their communities. When redditors purchase community awards with Reddit Coins, a percentage of the Reddit Coins goes to the community bank which the mod team will have access to. Mods can use these coins to give out mod-exclusive awards.
-
Reactions
Did you see a post that made you spit out your water? Give it a Spit-take award. What about a comment that makes you feel seen? Give it a Take my Energy award. Reaction awards are ways to, you guessed it, react to stuff on Reddit.
-
Medals
Originally, the only awards you could give people on Reddit were Silver, Gold, and Platinum. (And because Silver was the least-expensive, it was also a bit of a joke to give it to something.) Now there are five medal awards that increase in cost and ridiculousness—Silver, Gold, Platinum, Argentium, and Ternion All-Powerful.
-
Premium
Premium awards are only available to Reddit Premium members. They tend to be shinier and more flashy than other awards.
To give a post or comment an award, tap or click on the gift icon underneath the content you’d like to award, choose the award you want to give, and follow the step-by-step directions to purchase the award using Reddit Coins. Depending on what you prefer, you can give the award anonymously or send it from your username. And you can also add a private message.
